The Traditional King Makers of the Kom Kingdom

In Kom tradition, the title Fon refers to the traditional monarch or king of the Kom Kingdom. The institution of the Fon is three centuries old, rooted in sacred customs that guide leadership, succession, and cultural preservation.
Origins of the Kom Kingdom
The Kom Kingdom traces its beginnings to three founding clans that migrated together and eventually settled in Laikom, the ancestral capital of Kom. These clans are Ikui, Itsinala, and Achaf.
Although the royal bloodline comes from the Ikui Clan, succession is not drawn from the entire clan. It comes specifically from a distinguished royal branch known as Ikui Ndô Fukuin, the lineage entrusted with producing the Fons of Kom according to ancient custom.
The King Makers
The other two founding clans, Itsinala and Achaf, each provide one King Maker. Together they form one of the most sacred institutions in Kom tradition.
The King Maker from Itsinala holds the title Waindum.
The King Maker from Achaf holds the title Nkfein.
Their selection follows strict customary laws, spiritual guidance from the ancestors, and oversight from the Ngili (Palace Princes), the Fon, and the Kwihfoyn, the supreme traditional authority of Kom. A King Maker must be a Prince of the Kom Royal Palace, and once appointed, he serves for life. This reflects the immense trust and responsibility placed upon him.
Waindum: Yuh Kevin Nsom
Yuh Kevin Nsom serves as the Waindum, representing the Itsinala Clan. He was appointed during the reign of Fon Clement Ndzi II.
Raised within the Kom Kingdom, Waindum Kevin Nsom grew up immersed in customs, rituals, and oral traditions that have shaped Kom identity for more than three centuries. His years of learning under palace elders prepared him for the sacred responsibilities of safeguarding the kingdom’s cultural heritage.
Beyond tradition, he is a husband, father, and businessman specializing in automotive spare parts in Douala, Cameroon.
Nkfein: Yuh Cyril Kwain
Yuh Cyril Kwain serves as the Nkfein, representing the Achaf Clan.
Born and raised in the Kom Royal Palace, he grew up alongside Fon Clement Ndzi II, learning the sacred rituals and responsibilities that define Kom leadership. His deep familiarity with palace traditions made him a natural custodian of the kingdom’s spiritual and cultural institutions.
Following the disappearance of Fon Clement Ndzi II, he was appointed Nkfein to complete the sacred succession process. Together with the Waindum, he performs the rites required to select and install a new Fon according to ancestral law.
Guardians of Continuity
The offices of Waindum and Nkfein remain among the most respected institutions in the Kom Kingdom. They ensure continuity of leadership, legitimacy of succession, preservation of customs, and stability during transitions.
As Kom mourns the passing of Fon Clement Ndzi II, these institutions stand firm, guiding the kingdom through sacred tradition and ensuring that the throne passes according to the customs handed down by the ancestors.
