Music you can actually hear

BotangRecords has mentored more than 150 young artists — some through hands-on production, others through partner programs like WAPPCAM's summer bootcamps in Cameroon. A smaller number have gone all the way through to produced, released music available for public listening today. These are their stories.

BotangRecords artists have performed at the Minnesota State Fair and festivals across the Twin Cities, and joined Grand Katika, Juicejulius, Djara, and other Minnesota artists to produce “NDAMBA,” the official theme song for the 2024 National Veterans Tournament. Watch “NDAMBA”

This page has three tiers: Featured Artists (deep, ongoing collaborations with full releases), Artists We’ve Collaborated With (one confirmed project each), and Producers & Artists We’ve Also Worked With (named contributors across BotangRecords productions).

The Project That Started It All

Before BotangRecords existed as an organization, it was a task: bring together Kom artists scattered across the United States to record a single theme song, “Njang Woynkom America,” for the Afo-A-Kom USA convention — released June 17, 2023. Coordinating that many artists across that many states, around day jobs and distance, is what gave the momentum to organize formally as BotangRecords in the first place. The finished song was donated outright to Afo-A-Kom USA, for the organization to own and host on its own channel — not a BotangRecords credit, a gift to the community it was made for.

A remix followed in early 2026 — and that one lives on BotangRecords’ own channel, produced and hosted directly by BotangRecords. That’s the credit this page can fairly claim.

Born Zerubabel Paul Yem on April 24, 1987, in Fundong, Northwest Region, Busta P began his artistic life as a street dancer in 2005, long before he ever picked up a microphone. He didn’t come to music as a hobby — he came to it after educational setbacks in 2001 and a determined return to the classroom in 2015, earning both his O-Level and A-Level certificates while still building a career in sound. By 2014, he had established himself with “Njang Adeng,” a collaboration with fellow Kom artist Vinhora that proved traditional Njang rhythms could reach a contemporary audience without losing their authenticity. The releases that followed — “Njang Recall” (2021), “Kwang Kwang” (2022), and “Adeng” (2024) — built a discography rooted entirely in Kom language and tradition.

Busta P is, by every measure available to us, the BotangRecords artist who has worked with us the most and benefited the most from that partnership — a direct result of his own work ethic and his unmatched commitment to making culturally distinct music. From 2019 to 2022, he was a featured artist at Texas Lounge in Yaoundé, animating weekend performances with traditional music for audiences who came back specifically to see him. Beyond performing, he runs training sessions on traditional music technique, storytelling, and the proper playing of indigenous instruments — passing the tradition on the same way it was passed to him.

His work has drawn recognition well beyond BotangRecords’ own channels. Dr. Ateh Francis Ngong, Board Chair of the Cameroon Music Art Corporation (SONACAM), has called him “an extraordinary artist whose performances of traditional Kom dance and song are unparalleled.” His story — “Njang Music: A Living Kom Cultural Tradition, As Projected by Busta P” — first ran in The Post (Issue No. 02544, February 27, 2026), then was independently picked up and republished by The Guardian Post (Issue No. 3732, March 15, 2026, page 12) — a rare instance of the same cultural feature earning coverage in two separate national papers. On February 21, 2026, Kom Kingdom Vibes (KKV) also published a full Artist Spotlight tracing his family background, his path into music, and his standing among Kom cultural artists today. He has also appeared live on CRTV, Cameroon’s national broadcaster, discussing Kom traditional institutions in full regalia.

Angel Akong

BotangRecords’ youngest artist, Angel Akong was just 13 when she released her first cover, “Tribute to Zahara” — an emotional rendition of “Loliwe” that introduced her voice to the label’s audience, paying tribute to the late South African music icon whose legacy shaped her own artistry. She followed it with “Believe In Yourself,” a song written by WAPPCAM and produced by BotangRecords, filmed on location at Standard English School Bafoussam with her own schoolmates as the cast. She has since become a two-time guest on Cameroonian national television, appearing on CRTV Premium’s “Cameroon Feeling” for a back-to-school segment in September 2024, then returning as a special guest artist on December 17, 2024, to talk about “Tribute to Zahara” and her music journey — and continues to perform live in full traditional dress.

Angel Akong is also a WAPPCAM Educational Support Grant scholarship recipient, funded in partnership with BotangRecords. This year, she passed her GCE O Level exams in 10 papers — a success her mother proudly shared with BotangRecords after results were released a few weeks ago, and a real-world validation of what that scholarship was meant to make possible.

Y-derm

Yong Dermot Tufoin, known by his artistic name Bobe Y Derm, is an Afro/Njang music artist from Cameroon’s North West Region, born in 1997 in Belo. He holds a BSc in Geography from the University of Buea and is passionate about preserving cultural heritage through music. Y Derm began his musical journey in 2021, releasing early hits like “Helep (Njang)” and “Yeina” under Yarz Enter10ment, before transitioning to Bobe Heritage Empire as a solo artist.

His collaboration with BotangRecords began with “Cultural Heritage,” built from beats by founder Martin Tohmo with Y Derm contributing lyrics — the first time the two worked together directly. BotangRecords then sponsored a media tour that put Y Derm on CRTV, Cameroon’s national broadcaster, appearing on “Cameroun Feeling” (RTV Web) on September 3, 2024, to share his story and vision with a national audience — part of what BotangRecords describes as an ongoing effort to give struggling Cameroonian artists a platform. Angel Akong appeared on the very same program just two days later, on September 5 — both artists put in front of national television within the same week, through the same partnership. BotangRecords went on to sponsor the release of “Bom Va,” released under Bobe Heritage Empire and directed by Lary Pictures.

Y Derm and Busta P also have a collaborative history independent of BotangRecords — both have appeared together on multi-artist tracks including “Mi Layn Jele Ku Jele” (with T Son Evas, DP Star Yong, Vinhora, and Busta P) and an “Awonto (Remix)” (with Joekay Yong, Boss Lady, Wain Ntam, and Busta P) — meaning BotangRecords’ two featured male artists were already part of the same Kom music circle before either joined the label.

Artists We’ve Collaborated With

Don Shell

Don Shell’s connection to BotangRecords runs deeper and further back than any partnership — it’s a friendship. Martin Tohmo and Don Shell were close as young men back in Cameroon, with Don a junior in school at the time, and Martin admired his passion for music early on. Martin sponsored Don Shell’s very first album release, a vote of confidence that helped launch a career Don has continued building ever since. The two went separate ways over the years, but the support never really stopped — continuing today with BotangRecords as executive producer on Don Shell’s “Tie Bobe” (directed by Pointeh, produced by Mageek Feengaz).

Of everyone on this page, this is the one relationship that predates BotangRecords itself — a story of brotherhood first, business second.

Bashi Bright (Brido)

BotangRecords supported Brido’s release “U Go Shalaye” (Official Audio) — Watch on YouTube, also available to stream via DistroKid. The title draws on Nigerian street slang for the exhausting cycle of explaining yourself when you can’t meet financial obligations — the excuses, the embarrassment, always being behind. Brido flips that weight into a message aimed at the hustle generation: work hard, stay focused, and reach a place where you never have to explain yourself again.

Louis Alga

A Kom artist with a deep passion for cultural soul-searching music infused with storytelling, Louis Alga stands a real chance at wider success. In his own words, describing his collaboration with BotangRecords on “Idle Minds”:

Time spent with family and friends back home has been one of his most fulfilling experiences — he grew up in the mountains that continue to inspire his music. Earlier this year, he collaborated with BotangRecords to create what he calls one of the most beautiful pieces of art to come out of that partnership, one that has created real memories for people in Cameroon’s crisis-stricken regions — the reason the collaboration was worth pursuing in the first place. More adventures together are ahead.
